Suspense Crime, Digital Desk : Antimicrobial Resistance is a grave concern and a major threat to the entire world. The emergence of a germ's resistance to the medicines prescribed to kill that very germ, is known as antimicrobial resistance. It's widely believed that overuse of antibiotics are the reason, however a new dimension has been added by recent research. Let us take a closer look at what that is.Are antibiotics the only responsible factor?A recent study conducted by King's College London found that antimicrobial resistance is not merely caused by the use of antibiotics but by socio-economic inequalities and living conditions. Living in a congested environment and without sanitation are factors increasing this threat. There is a risk of 39 million deaths in 25 years! The sheer extent of the crisis is evident from a report published in The Lancet. According to the findings, antimicrobial resistance could kill over 39 million people worldwide in the next 25 years, hence a growing threat. What does the research say?Tania Datorini, Professor of Artificial Intelligence in Science at King's College London and the senior author of the study explained that "We have employed a multi-scale, multi-model approach, which has not been implemented in this way before."By understanding what resistance traits are emerging, where they are spreading, and what factors are promoting their spread, we can direct surveillance, policy and interventions more effectively toward threats which will impact on global health.According to Professor Tania Datorini, a decisive action would be the need for significant structural changes to the use of antibiotics, rather than individual issues with inequality, sanitation, nutrition, health, and disparity.
