BHIM App Transactions Triple in a Year; Telangana Sees Strong Digital Payments Growth

BHIM Payments App, developed by NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSL), has registered robust growth over the past year, with transaction volumes more than tripling between June 2025 and May 2026, said Ms Lalitha Nataraj, Managing Director and CEO, NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSL) here on Wednesday.Addressing a press conference here, she said the platform's monthly transaction volume increased from 79.64 million in June 2025 to 244 million in May 2026.During May alone, transactions worth ₹26,952 crore were processed through the app, reflecting the growing adoption of digital payments across the country, she said.Telangana also witnessed a three-fold rise in transaction volumes during the period, in line with the national trend.Groceries emerged as the largest merchant category on the platform in the state, accounting for 23.9 per cent of transactions in May 2026, followed by food outlets at 18.1 per cent and quick commerce at 11.6 per cent, she informed.Other significant categories included dairy and bakeries (3.2 per cent), fuel stations (2.8 per cent), e-commerce (2.2 per cent) and government services (2.0 per cent), indicating the increasing use of digital payments for everyday spending, she said.Ms Lalitha Nataraj said the strong growth in Telangana reflected the increasing integration of digital payments into daily life, particularly for routine transactions such as groceries and food purchases.The app supports more than 15 regional languages, including Telugu, and is designed to function efficiently in low-connectivity areas, helping expand digital payment adoption in rural and semi-urban regions, she said.Among its key features are UPI Circle for delegated payments, Family Mode for managing household expenses, Split Expenses, Spends Analytics, UPI Lite Auto Top-Up, RuPay Credit Card on UPI, forex booking services, prepaid mobile recharges and rewards on eligible transactions, she added.
