Bhopal: In a considerable effort to improve road safety in the region, Bhopal District Collector Kaushalendra Vikram Singh has issued a new directive: two-wheeler riders in Bhopal will not be allowed to purchase fuel if they are not wearing helmets. This directive will be effective at all petrol and CNG pumps within Bhopal district. This order has been issued in the wake of numerous road accidents involving helmetless riders. The Collector's order emphasizes that any person or fuel station sited for breaching the rule will be punished under Part 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) law. In compliance to the above stated law, fuel pump operators are instructed to ensure that riders wearing helmets are not provided services and that riders using ISI-marked helmets are provided fuel. The Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 in Section 129 states that every two-wheeler rider and a passenger sitting on the rear seat are required to properly wear safety helmets.Strive for safe roads Although similar campaigns have been executed in Bhopal earlier, the district administration has pledged full commitment for this one. It has been mandated by the district administration that no petrol or CNG will be sold to two wheeler riders who are not wearing helmets. As the city is likely to witness a surge in the wearing of helmets while riding, the expectation set here is that a lot of Bhopal residents will also start following the safe riding.
