Bihar Partners with Isha Outreach for Asia's Landmark Baans Ghat Crematorium in Patna

The Government of Bihar has officially partnered with Isha Outreach—the social and environmental welfare arm of the Isha Foundation—to assume operation and maintenance of the historic Baans Ghat Crematorium in Patna. The state government selected the spiritual organisation because of its 15-year track record managing 33 crematoriums in partnership with the Government of Tamil Nadu. The project combines technology and efficient administrative protocols with deep cultural sanctity to create a modern, dignified space for grieving families.Technical & Infrastructural Profile of Baans GhatSpanning 4.5 acres along the banks of the River Ganga, Baans Ghat is recognised as one of the largest crematorium facilities in Asia and a premier state-of-the-art facility in Eastern India.[Baans Ghat Daily Operational Capacity] - Total Capacity: ~50 Cremations per Day -Peak Concurrency: 18 Simultaneous Services -4 Electric Furnace Units -6 Eco-Friendly Wood Furnaces -8 Traditional Open-Air Platforms 1. Transparent Pricing & Social Welfare PoliciesTo eliminate the issue of predatory pricing or exploitation by intermediaries during vulnerable moments, the facility operates under a fixed, heavily subsidised tariff structure:Electric Cremation Fee: Fixed at a nominal ₹3,500 (the lowest baseline allowed under the Patna Municipal Corporation agreement to cover basic electricity and mechanical upkeep).Traditional Wood-Based Cremation Fee: Fixed service fee of ₹3,500 (cost of timber/firewood is sourced separately by the family).BPL & Antyodaya Social Safety Net: In line with its core mission of public service, Isha Outreach provides 100% free cremation services for families holding an Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) or Below Poverty Line (BPL) card.2. Environmental Upgrades & Future RoadmapTraditionally, a standard open-pyre funeral requires roughly 200–300 kg of wood. To reduce the city’s carbon footprint and heavy air pollution without disrupting essential cultural sentiment, Isha Outreach has implemented a progressive transition framework:LPG Transition: Existing wood-burning furnaces will be systematically phased out and converted into modern Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) furnaces.Cultural Preservation: The newly deployed gas-based crematoriums utilise a hybrid approach in which a minimal amount of firewood (1–2 kg) is introduced alongside the gas fuel, honouring ancestral Vedic customs while reducing raw wood consumption.Expanded Footprint Across BiharWhile Isha Outreach currently operates only at Baans Ghat in Patna, the Department of Urban Development and Housing has already laid out a broader state-wide modernisation roadmap.[Bihar State Crematorium Modernisation Blueprint] - Active Operations: Patna (Baans Ghat) - Sites Allotted/Under Construction: Begusarai (Simariya), Bhagalpur, Gaya, Saharsa -Allotment Phase: Chapra Ownership Clarification: The Government of Bihar explicitly retains full statutory ownership of all properties, land, and newly constructed infrastructure. Isha Outreach functions strictly as an operational and administrative service partner.
