Bharatiya Janata Party leader Gourav Vallabh has launched a fierce verbal attack against Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra following her recent statement condemning the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. Vallabh accused the Congress leader of shedding crocodile tears and labeled her concern as performative politics. He drew a sharp contrast between her current demand for the safety of minorities in Bangladesh and her past political actions especially noting her appearance in Parliament with a bag that had Palestine written on it. According to Vallabh this display of solidarity with Palestine contradicts her sudden concern for Hindu minorities considering her party previously opposed legislative measures intended to help them. The controversy began after Priyanka Gandhi posted a message on social media expressing deep distress over the brutal killing of a Hindu youth named Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh. She described the mob lynching of the 25 year old man in Mymensingh as a crime against humanity and stated that violence based on religion has no place in a civilized society.[2] In her plea she urged the Indian government to intervene strongly with the Bangladeshi authorities to ensure the safety of Hindu Christian and Buddhist minorities. However Vallabh dismissed this plea as hollow arguing that the Congress party had vehemently opposed the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens which were specifically designed to provide sanctuary and citizenship to persecuted religious minorities from neighboring Islamic nations.Vallabh further intensified his attack by demanding that Priyanka Gandhi apologize for her past opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act if her current concern for Bangladeshi Hindus is genuine. He stated that the entire country knows the Congress party stood against the very law that would have protected people like the victim in Bangladesh. By bringing up the instance where she reportedly carried a bag symbolizing support for Palestine to Parliament Vallabh aimed to highlight what he views as the selective outrage of the Congress leadership which he claims prioritizes certain votebanks while ignoring others until it becomes politically expedient to speak up. The BJP leader insisted that the nation sees through this duality and urged her to stop what he termed as the drama of false sympathy.
