Bulldozer Justice in Dhanbad: BCCL Razes 16 Illegal Homes in Land-Subsidence Hotspot

The sound of bulldozers echoed through Dhanbad’s Tandabari area on Tuesday as BCCL (Bharat Coking Coal Limited) management launched a decisive operation to clear illegal settlements. In a major drive to mitigate risks in the subsidence-prone Sonardi OP region, authorities successfully demolished 16 out of 21 identified illegal residences. The operation, conducted under tight security, marks a critical step by the coal company to prevent future tragedies in an area long considered volatile and unsafe for human habitation.Prioritizing Safety Over SettlementsThe demolition drive, which commenced around 12:00 PM, was carried out peacefully in the presence of Sonardih OP police and CISF units. BCCL officials utilized public address systems to inform residents of the scheduled action before JCB machines began dismantling the structures. Management officials emphasized that the primary motivation for this drastic measure is the protection of life and property. Given the area's history of dangerous land subsidence, BCCL maintains that clearing these illegal dwellings is essential to avert catastrophic accidents that could endanger residents further. The Shadow of the March 31st TragedyThis crackdown comes in the wake of a horrific landslide that struck Tandabari on March 31st. In that devastating incident, a home was completely submerged into the ground, leading to the tragic loss of three lives. Following the disaster, a comprehensive survey was commissioned by BCCL, which identified several households as being at extreme risk due to their proximity to unstable coal mining zones. The names of the affected families—including those of Rampyari Devi, Chandeshwar Bhuiyan, Rajeshwar Ravidas, and others—were part of a list of 21 households flagged for mandatory relocation and structural removal.Tight Security and Future PlanningThe demolition was overseen by a significant security detail, including ABG Colliery Personnel Manager Alok Kumar Rai, CISF Post Commander SK Singh, and various local law enforcement personnel. Officials present at the scene confirmed that the remaining five identified structures are also slated for demolition in the coming days. As the Jharkhand region grapples with the ongoing threat of land subsidence, the BCCL administration is under pressure to ensure that no further human settlements are permitted in zones where the ground remains compromised by mining activities.
