Cambodia-Thailand Peace Deal Stalls After Landmine Injures Thai Soldiers

A US-brokered peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand has been abruptly suspended after a landmine explosion near their shared border injured several Thai soldiers. The incident has led Thailand to halt all actions under the truce, including the planned release of 18 Cambodian soldiers, threatening to derail the fragile peace process.Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced the suspension, stating that the deal is on hold until the country's demands are met. He cited that "hostility towards our national security has not decreased as we thought it would." The explosion occurred in Thailand's Sisaket province when soldiers on patrol encountered a landmine. Reports indicate that one soldier lost a foot while others sustained injuries. The Thai military has accused Cambodia of planting new landmines in violation of the agreement, a claim that Cambodian officials have denied, attributing the blast to "remnants of past conflicts."The peace pact, known as the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, was brokered in October with former US President Donald Trump as a witness during the ASEAN summit in Malaysia. The agreement was established following a deadly five-day border conflict in July that killed dozens and displaced over 300,000 civilians. The core tenets of the deal included the withdrawal of heavy weaponry from border regions and collaborative efforts in landmine clearance to address a long-standing territorial dispute.
