Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay delivered a deeply emotional address at the Atlas Ground in Karur, recalling the tragic stampede that claimed 41 innocent lives on September 25 last year. Distributing compassionate government job appointment orders to the victims' grieving families, Vijay emphasised that no political elevation or career milestone could ever diminish the profound grief of losing citizens."No matter how great a height a man reaches in life, certain pains and wounds in the heart cannot be forgotten," Vijay stated, visibly moved. "More than anything else, the pain and wound that affected me the most is the Karur incident."Chief Minister Questions Intentional Police OversightThe Chief Minister openly questioned the operational actions and oversight of the regional police department during the fateful event, which took place before his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), swept into power. Vijay revealed a stark disparity in how law enforcement handled his public itineraries during that period.He disclosed that before an earlier rally scheduled in nearby Perambalur, senior police commanders had advised him to cancel the event, citing uncontrollable crowd surges and safety risks. However, despite tracking an identical, massive turnout building up in Karur, local intelligence units and station chiefs offered no such cautionary briefings."After finishing the Namakkal meeting, when we were coming to Karur, couldn’t the Karur police have alerted us?" Vijay asked the gathering. "They could have cancelled the meeting if they felt the crowd could not be controlled. They had every right to do so. Instead, they brought us to the venue. I believed them completely and even thanked the police officers that day. I never imagined such a tragedy would happen." He directly questioned who authorised the crowd flow plans and whether adequate security logistics were intentionally withheld.Pushing Back Against Political Mockery During GrievingReflecting on the severe political backlash he endured following the disaster, Vijay expressed deep hurt over how opposition factions used the tragedy for political targeting. While he was privately dealing with the shock and meeting grieving families, critics publicly accused him of evading accountability."If my picture appeared on television, children would smile and call me 'Vijay uncle'," the Chief Minister recalled. "We lost those innocent children who were like God. Even while I was grieving, people mocked me and blamed me, asking why I had 'run away and hidden'."TVK to Construct Permanent Memorial Against 'Political Plots'To ensure the 41 victims are never forgotten, CM Vijay announced that the TVK will independently fund and construct a permanent structural memorial in Karur. Beyond serving as a space for remembrance, Vijay stated the monument will stand as a historical record of the institutional failures and underlying conspiracies that preceded his administration.The 2025 Karur crowd crush quickly escalated into a major political battleground between the TVK and the then-ruling DMK administration over administrative security failures. Recognising the gravity of the case, the Supreme Court of India stepped in on October 13, 2025, stripping the state police of their mandate and transferring the entire probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after observing that the incident had profoundly shaken the public conscience.While the opposition DMK continues to allege that the new government’s swift distribution of jobs and compensatory benefits could influence the ongoing federal inquiry, the Vijay administration maintains that providing immediate relief to broken households remains their absolute moral and administrative priority.
