
The landmark Digital India programme will officially complete 11 glorious years of nationwide digital transformation on July 1. Ahead of the anniversary, the Government of India has highlighted the program's role in transforming public governance, expanding high-speed digital access, and building one of the world’s largest and most efficient Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) ecosystems.According to an official statement from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the programme has changed how everyday citizens access public services, make secure digital payments, and receive targeted welfare benefits. The government said the initiative has dramatically improved rural internet connectivity, streamlined paperwork, and made government services available to citizens in both rural and urban areas.High-Speed BharatNet Broadband Expands into Rural HeartlandThe government revealed that nearly 97 per cent of the country’s massive 2.22 lakh Gram Panchayats have now been successfully linked through the high-speed BharatNet project. To achieve this unprecedented connectivity, an astronomical 7 lakh kilometres of optical fibre cable (OFC) have been laid across the length and breadth of India.As a direct result of these aggressive infrastructure initiatives, the total number of broadband subscribers nationwide skyrocketed to a staggering 106.58 crore by March 2026. A dense network of more than 6.5 lakh Common Service Centres (CSCs) and 1.6 lakh digitised post offices serves as a key hub for delivering smooth e-governance services to people in remote areas.The Power of JAM Trinity: ₹51 Lakh Crore Transferred DirectlyAt the absolute core of India's historic financial inclusion story is the powerhouse JAM Trinity—consisting of Jan Dhan bank accounts, biometric identity verification, and ubiquitous mobile connectivity. The government announced that the total number of basic Jan Dhan bank accounts had increased to an impressive 57.78 crore by February 2026.Simultaneously, biometric-secure identities within the national ecosystem surpassed 144 crore enrolments. Leveraging this incredibly robust digital architecture, the state has securely dispatched Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) worth more than ₹51 lakh crore directly into the verified bank accounts of genuine beneficiaries, completely eradicating middleman corruption and structural leakages.Global Dominance: UPI Processes 24,162 Crore TransactionsIndia has officially cemented its status as the undisputed global leader in real-time digital payments. The revolutionary Unified Payments Interface (UPI) now accounts for nearly 49 per cent of the world's real-time transaction volume. Reflecting explosive adoption rates, UPI successfully processed more than 24,162 crore digital transactions during the financial year 2025-26 alone. The indigenously developed payment interface has expanded internationally and is now operational in multiple countries.Simultaneously, the paperless cloud platform DigiLocker has registered over 70.69 crore active users and successfully issued more than 850 crore authentic digital documents. In the healthcare sector, the eSanjeevani portal has facilitated over 48 crore remote telemedicine consultations, while the historic CoWIN platform seamlessly managed the distribution of more than 220 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses.Manufacturing Boom Powers the Viksit Bharat 2047 VisionBeyond governance, the Digital India initiative has spurred domestic electronics manufacturing, advanced AI research, digital commerce networks, and large-scale youth skill development. Domestic electronics production has witnessed a meteoric rise, surging from ₹1.9 lakh crore in FY 2014-15 to an estimated ₹12 lakh crore by March 2026. Concurrently, India’s powerhouse IT and ITeS industry generated an impressive USD 283 billion in revenue during FY25.Looking outward, India has formally signed bilateral agreements with 24 countries worldwide to cooperate on deploying the 'India Stack' and customised Digital Public Infrastructure. Indian platforms like UPI, DigiLocker, CoWIN, and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) are now recognised worldwide as leading examples of tech-driven governance as the country moves toward its ambitious Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
