Indian Railways is soon rolling out new luggage rules that feel a lot like what airline companies already do. Before jumping on the train, you’ll need to check that your bags don’t weigh more than the allowed limit. If your luggage is heavier, you’ll have to pay an extra fee or leave some items behind. This system aims to speed up boarding and make the trip more comfortable for those traveling with minimal bags. However, folks who usually pack for longer stays or family trips might find the new rule a bit tricky and need to plan their packing more carefully.Luggage Rules According to ClassWhen traveling with Indian Railways, luggage rules create different guidelines based on your train class. Here’s a quick breakdown of how much baggage you can bring per passenger: First Class AC: 70 kg per passenger. Second Class AC: 50 kg per passenger. Third Class and Sleeper Class: 40 kg per passenger. General Class: 35 kg per passenger. Keep in mind that it’s the number of bags that can increase the risk of a penalty, because oversized bags that take up extra space, even if they’re within the weight limit, can get you fined.The new rule begins at these stationsHimanshu Shukla, the senior divisional commercial manager (DCM) of the Prayagraj division within the North Central Railway, shared with TOI, “The new step aims to give passengers a smoother and safer journey, especially for those traveling long distances.” The policy rolls out first at major North Central Railway nodes, including Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Chheoki, Subedarganj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Govindpuri, and Etawah. Shukla explained that staff will check passengers’ luggage at the gates. Travelers will be allowed to enter the platforms only if their bags meet the weight guidelines.
