From phone to meat, poultry and skin, there are numerous things we need to wash our hands before we eat and cook. Therefore, you must always remember to wash your hands for 20-25 seconds before you start cooking using soap.Not keeping the cutting or chopping board cleanSo do you wash your chopping board just once a day, then use it for all types of food throughout the day? This bad habit may give room for bacteria like Salmonella and E.coli to multiply which is one of the reasons for food poisoning.Not washing vegetables and fruits before cutting themWhether you bought them from the market, or had them washed when they came from the freezer, you must wash vegetables and fruits before you cut them. Most importantly, always wash the vegetables and fruits under the tap water and not in a bowl filled with water to remove all the unwanted elements.Washing raw meatBy washing raw meat before cooking, you allow contamination of the kitchen area. There are bacteria like Salmonella and Campylobacter that are found in raw meat which can spread up to 3 ft around the sink once meat is washed. The correct way to kill these bacteria in raw meat is through cooking it at appropriate temperatures.Not keeping the sponge cleanUsing a sponge over and over again, or using a dirty sponge to wash dishes, can be very hazardous as such a sponge is a house to bacteria, fungus and very harmful viruses. Bacteria may transmit to the kitchen counter from it and to food that you may be cooking or eating hence putting you at risk of food poisoning.Not keeping the kitchen slab cleanAt times, we do wash our kitchen slab, however fail to sanitize it. This habit is not just a cause for bacteria growth, it may also welcome cockroaches and ants.
