During Justice BR Gavai's nearly six-month tenure as Chief Justice of India (CJI), 10 judges from the Scheduled Caste (SC) category and 11 judges from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) and Backward Classes (BC) categories were appointed to various High Courts across the country. Justice Gavai is the country's first Buddhist and second Dalit Chief Justice. He headed the Supreme Court Collegium, which recommended 129 names to the government for appointment as judges in various High Courts, of which 93 were approved.Five judges – Justice NV Anjaria, Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Justice AS Chandurkar, Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Vipul Manubhai Pancholi – were also appointed to the apex court during Justice Gavai's tenure. According to the details of judges' appointments uploaded on the Supreme Court website from May 14 till date, after Justice Gavai became the Chief Justice of India, the 93 names approved by the government for appointment to the High Courts included the names of 13 judges from minority communities and 15 women judges.According to the details, of the judges whose appointments were approved during Justice Gavai's tenure, five are former or serving judges, while 49 judges were appointed from the bar and the rest are from the service cadre. Justice Gavai will retire on Sunday (November 23). His successor, Justice Surya Kant, will be sworn in as the next Chief Justice of India on November 24.Gavai, the 52nd Chief Justice of India, delivered several significant judgments during his six-month tenure, including striking down key provisions of the Waqf Act, striking down the Tribunals Reforms Act, and allowing the Centre to grant green clearance to projects later. Friday was Justice Gavai's last working day as Chief Justice. He was the second Dalit judge to head the Indian judiciary after Justice KG Balakrishnan.Overwhelmed by the honour he received on his last working day, Justice Gavai said he was leaving the institution "with a sense of complete satisfaction" and as a "student of justice" after completing a journey of four decades as a lawyer and judge.
