FMDA Builds 15-Acre Yamuna Reservoir and Rain Wells to Deliver 50 MLD Water and Recharge Groundwater

Residents of Faridabad grappling with acute summer water shortages can look forward to permanent relief as the Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority (FMDA) accelerates major water augmentation and groundwater recharging projects across the region. Designed to combat chronic supply deficits, the comprehensive initiative combines the construction of a massive Yamuna floodplain reservoir with high-capacity rain wells to secure long-term water sustainability.15.29-Acre Yamuna Reservoir to Recharge Millions of LitersFMDA Chief Executive Officer PC Meena personally inspected the ongoing construction site of the proposed reservoir located in Chandpur village. Spanning 15.29 acres of land within the Yamuna floodplain, the project involves excavating approximately 300,000 cubic meters of soil.The primary objective of this massive reservoir is to capture and store excess monsoon and floodwater from the Yamuna River. Once filled, the reservoir is projected to recharge 300 to 400 million liters (30 to 40 crore liters) of groundwater per cycle, significantly revitalizing local aquifers and stabilizing the declining water table.Five New Rain Wells to Supply 50 MLD Additional WaterAlongside groundwater conservation, the multi-crore infrastructure project focuses on boosting direct tap-water availability. FMDA is constructing five advanced rain wells alongside a primary boosting station and connecting pipelines.Each individual rain well is engineered with a capacity of 10 MLD (Million Liters per Day), culminating in 50 MLD of additional drinking water for the city. This vital boost directly targets underserved regions, with the entire ₹96.50 crore project slated for completion by June 15, 2027.Bringing Summer Relief to 3 Lakh ResidentsThe ambitious water infrastructure project spans multiple legislative constituencies, including Badshah, Tigaon, and Faridabad. Upon completion, the initiative is expected to directly alleviate severe summer drinking water shortages for an estimated 2 to 3 lakh population living in tail-end and high-stress localities.Key neighborhoods projected to benefit from stabilized water pressures include Greenfield Colony, Charmwood Village, NIT Faridabad, Sector-21C, Sector-45, and Sector-46. By simultaneously expanding municipal water supply and aggressively recharging groundwater through the Yamuna floodplains, FMDA aims to permanently resolve Faridabad's seasonal water crisis.
