Gujarat on Red Alert: IMD Warns of Extremely Heavy Rainfall in Ahmedabad and Several Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a severe weather warning for Gujarat, placing Ahmedabad and several other districts under a 'Red Alert' for extremely heavy to exceptionally heavy rainfall. According to the latest forecasts, this intense wet spell is expected to persist between July 30 and August 2, significantly disrupting daily life across the state.The active monsoon trough, coupled with a deep depression moving across central India toward Madhya Pradesh and an offshore trough extending from the Gujarat coast, has created highly favourable conditions for widespread downpours.IMD Gujarat Director A.K. Das confirmed that these multiple weather systems are increasing the likelihood of not just heavy rain, but also intense thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds across the state over the next few days.Districts Under the Red AlertThe weather department has identified 13 specific districts at the highest risk of receiving exceptional rainfall. The state government has instructed district administrations to ensure the speedy evacuation of residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas to designated shelter homes.As a direct precautionary measure, schools and colleges in several heavily affected districts, including Ahmedabad and Navsari, have been ordered to remain closed.Civic bodies are also taking proactive steps to prevent accidents. In Surat, the Municipal Corporation has initiated the inspection of large advertising hoardings, lowered high-mast street lights, and temporarily closed certain roads in anticipation of the high-velocity winds.Warnings for Fishermen and Coastal AreasThe IMD has issued strict warnings regarding maritime conditions. Strong southwesterly winds are expected over coastal areas due to a steep pressure gradient. Between July 30 and August 1, wind speeds are anticipated to range from 40 to 50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph over the South Gujarat coast.As a result, fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea until the weather systems stabilise. Residents in all affected districts are urged to stay updated with official IMD advisories and exercise extreme caution during periods of intense rainfall.
