The ancient Vedic texts impress upon us the impact celestial bodies have on human life. Within Vedic astrology, the Navagraha, or nine planets, are determining factors of human destiny. Certain planetary positions, as indicated by the birth chart, have the potential to bring about unfavorable results. By chanting or understanding the Navagraha Mantras, negative impacts can be reduced and better balance and wellness can be achieved. The Navagraha are the three lunar bodies, as well as the Sun and two lunar nodes, constituting Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budha, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu, and Ketu. Each one of these celestial bodies holds responsibilities that are unique. They shape one’s life, character, mental and physical wellness, profession, interpersonal connections, and the abundance one receives. Certain placements of these planets can make one or more of these planets show hostile placements, thus creating friction, anguish, and imbalance. To address these possible challenges, the Vedic tradition prescribes potent mantras commonly called Navagraha Mantras. Their chanting is thought to placate the planetary gods, harmonize their influences, and elicit favorable universal energies. As an example, the Surya mantra is believed to increase ones stamina and wisdom while the Chandra mantra is known for a calm mind and creativity. Mantras linked to Mars give courage and strength, Mercury to intellect and communication, Jupiter to wisdom and luck, Venus to prosperity, discipline and resilience from Saturn, transformation from Rahu, and spiritual growth from Ketu. These mantras can be recited to promote overall wellness, mitigate the adverse effects of difficult planetary cycles, and increase the auspicious effects of benefic planets. This is believed to help resolve certain “Navagraha doshas” (afflictions) and the bestowal of peace and prosperity in a person’s life.
