In a major blow to illegal drug cultivation, the Raigarh Police in Chhattisgarh have successfully busted a large-scale opium plantation. Leveraging modern technology, the district police used high-resolution drones to scan remote agricultural patches, leading to the discovery of illicit crops hidden amidst legitimate farming. The Drone Breakthrough Acting on a tip-off about suspicious farming activities in the Kapu and Dharamjaigarh forest ranges, the police deployed drone cameras to survey areas that are difficult to access by foot. The aerial footage clearly identified the distinct white and purple flowers of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) growing under the cover of other tall crops.A String of Successful Raids This operation marks the fifth successful raid in just 18 days within the Raigarh district, signaling a growing trend of illegal cultivation in the region. During the latest crackdown, a joint team of local police and narcotics cells seized thousands of standing opium plants. The estimated market value of the seized contraband is reported to be in the lakhs.Arrests and Legal Action Three individuals allegedly involved in the cultivation and planned distribution of the opium have been arrested. Preliminary investigations suggest that the accused were attempting to produce "Afeem" (opium) for local supply and smuggling into neighboring states. The police have registered cases under the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act. Raigarh Superintendent of Police (SP) stated that the use of drones will now be a permanent feature in the district's anti-narcotics strategy to ensure that no corner of the forest or hilly terrain remains a safe haven for drug peddlers.Community Vigilance The police have also urged local villagers to report any unusual farming patterns or the presence of outsiders in forest lands, assuring that the identity of informants will remain strictly confidential.
