Shubman Gill will also be ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa due to a neck injury, BCCI sources said on Saturday. The series begins on November 30. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant and senior batsman KL Rahul could be considered for captaincy, while senior batsman Rohit Sharma is also in the squad.According to reliable BCCI sources, Gill's injury is not just a neck spasm. He will need rest, and the Indian team management will not rush his return. Gill suffered neck spasms while batting in the first Test in Kolkata. He missed the Guwahati Test due to the injury. He is currently in Mumbai, undergoing further tests, including an MRI.The source said, "Tests are being conducted to determine whether it's a muscle or tissue injury. As of now, the selectors are hopeful he'll be able to play the T20I against South Africa." Pant is a strong contender for the captaincy, having also led in the second Test. However, he has played only one ODI in the past year. Yashasvi Jaiswal could open the innings alongside Rohit SharmaAbhishek Sharma could be the reserve opener. Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, and Arshdeep Singh will handle the fast bowling duties. Jasprit Bumrah could be rested. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya, who is struggling with injury, will only play T20s until next year's World Cup. Kuldeep Yadav may take a break for personal reasons. In such a scenario, the spin department will be dependent on Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy, and Washington Sundar.
