India's 2nd Vande Bharat Sleeper Unveiled on Varanasi-New Delhi Route

Redefining overnight rail transit with fortress-like passenger safety, Indian Railways is rolling out the nation's second semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Sleeper Express connecting the holy city of Varanasi directly with the national capital, New Delhi. The launch addresses long-standing passenger concerns regarding nocturnal transit security, unauthorized boarding, and onboard theft. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will flag off the service from Varanasi Junction at 3:30 PM on Saturday, alongside the ceremonial green-lighting of the Prayagraj Rambagh–Varanasi MEMU and the Varanasi City–Rajatalab MEMU services. This landmark service follows the successful introduction of the country's very first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express on January 17, 2026, which currently links Kamakhya in Guwahati with Howrah in Kolkata.Complete Operational Timetable, Days of Service, and Major StoppagesThe regular timetable designates Train Number 27421 for the journey from Varanasi Junction to New Delhi, departing Varanasi at 8:50 PM and pulling into New Delhi Railway Station the following morning at 6:10 AM. This leg operates six days a week, remaining non-operational on Fridays. On the return corridor, Train Number 27422 departs New Delhi at 9:40 PM and terminates at Varanasi Junction at 7:10 AM the following morning, operating on all weekdays except Saturdays. Strategically planned to service crucial northern passenger hubs, the overnight superfast service features scheduled halts at Prayagraj Junction, Kanpur Central, Aligarh, and Ghaziabad stations.360-Degree CCTV Network to Curb Thefts, Seat Arbitrariness, and HarassmentEngineered for a design speed of 180 km/h with high-speed trials already completed, the sleeper train incorporates unprecedented surveillance systems across its entire interior. High-resolution optical CCTV lenses are operational in all coaches to instantly capture images of pickpockets, unauthorized intruders, and criminals. Beyond eliminating petty theft, continuous optical monitoring is designed to prevent harassment, stop anti-social brawls, and eliminate the unruly occupation of reserved berths by unauthorized commuters, establishing strict decorum throughout the night journey.Coach Composition, Capacity, and State-of-the-Art Passenger ComfortThe sleek 16-coach rake features 11 Third AC coaches, 4 Second AC coaches, and 1 First AC coach, omitting general unreserved compartments entirely to maintain passenger comfort and structural security. The train accommodates approximately 823 passengers simultaneously in a climate-controlled environment. The rolling stock is built on an advanced suspension system that minimizes track jerks, vibrations, and noise pollution during high-speed nocturnal runs. Automatic sliding doors open and close with sensor controls, and every coach is equipped with an emergency talk-back unit enabling commuters to communicate instantly with the onboard escort crew during critical situations.Kavach Anti-Collision Shield and Advanced Locopilot Safety EquipmentFor mission-critical train operations, the Varanasi–New Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper is fully integrated with the indigenous Kavach anti-collision system, eliminating signal passing at danger (SPAD) hazards and automatically applying brakes in emergency scenarios. The coaches house automated fire detection and suppression systems that immediately isolate smoke or thermal hazards. In parallel, commuters can establish two-way communication directly with the loco pilot or train manager during emergencies, while dedicated accommodations and accessibility features are integrated to assist passengers with disabilities. The locomotive cab is outfitted with modern ergonomic displays, fail-safe digital instruments, and real-time monitoring gear to ensure full situational awareness for the crew.
