India's telecommunications sector has recorded a robust expansion, with the total telephone subscriber base rising by 6.20 million to reach 1.35 billion (1,354.28 million) in July. According to the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the sector registered a monthly growth rate of 0.46 per cent. This consistent upward trajectory is driven by ongoing additions to both wireless and wireline network connections nationwide.Wireless and Wireline Segments Drive MomentumThe data highlights that wireless subscriptions remain the core anchor of India's digital framework, expanding by 0.46 per cent to touch 1.31 billion users. Meanwhile, fixed-line or wireline connections also saw steady adoption, rising 0.39 per cent to reach 48.01 million users. Overall wireless tele-density increased to 90.04 per cent, reflecting deeper penetration of mobile technology across both urban and rural demographics.Broadband Subscriptions and 5G ExpansionSimultaneously, India's broadband market witnessed notable acceleration, growing from 1.09 billion to 1.094 billion subscribers in July at a monthly growth rate of 0.64 per cent. Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services, particularly 5G-enabled home and enterprise broadband solutions, expanded rapidly, reaching 18.84 million users. Market leadership remains heavily consolidated among top telecom service providers like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, who continue to spearhead high-speed data expansion across tier-1 and tier-2 cities, and rural heartlands.
