IPL Star Shashank Singh and Retired IPS Father Booked for Alleged Assault and Forced Labor in Bhopal

In a major high-profile legal development, Indian Premier League (IPL) all-rounder Shashank Singh and his father, retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Shailesh Singh, have been named in a criminal case registered by the Bhopal Police. The First Information Report (FIR), which also implicates the family's private driver, follows serious allegations of physical assault, severe verbal abuse, and illegal confinement levelled by their domestic cook at their residence on Neelbad-Mendori Road.False Promises: From Career Assurances to ConfiscationThe complainant, identified as 31-year-old Vipendra Singh Tomar, a native of the Rewa district in Madhya Pradesh, claimed he was brought to Bhopal by an acquaintance, Mohit Singh Sengar. Tomar took the job on June 25, 2026, under the impression that he would receive a monthly remuneration of Rs 15,000, free boarding, and critical assistance in securing a stable government job in the future. However, the environment turned hostile within hours of his arrival. Tomar alleged that the family subjected him to intense mental pressure and continuous nitpicking regarding the taste and preparation of the food. Realising the abusive nature of the workplace, Tomar expressed his desire to quit and return home. Instead of letting him leave, the accused allegedly confiscated his mobile phone to prevent him from contacting the outside world and forced him to continue working against his will.Brutal Assault and Financial Extortion Alleged Inside the ResidenceThe situation escalated drastically into physical violence when Tomar demanded his phone back on the morning of June 28. Out of fear for his safety, the cook locked himself inside a room to escape the hostility.Extract from Police Complaint: The victim stated that the father-son duo, along with their driver, broke into the room, physically assaulted him, and hurled obscene verbal abuses before kicking him out of the house. Furthermore, the accused allegedly forced Tomar to digitally transfer Rs 1,000 to them as "living and food expenses" for the brief period he stayed at their property.A subsequent medical examination conducted by the local police corroborated the victim's statements, confirming visible injury marks on his face and body.Police Launch Investigation Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)Following the formal complaint and medical evaluation, the Ratibad Police Station in Bhopal registered a case against the Punjab Kings batter, his father (who previously served as the Special Director General of MP Police), and their driver. The FIR invokes severe provisions of the modern Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) code:Section 296(B): About obscene acts and public verbal abuse.Section 115(2): Voluntarily causing hurt and physical injury.Section 3(5): Joint criminal liability, indicating acts done by multiple individuals with a shared common intention.A senior Bhopal Police officer confirmed that given the high-profile stature of the accused—involving an active IPL athlete and a former top administrative officer—the investigation is being handled with utmost precision. Witnesses are being cross-examined, and we will take strict legal action based on verified evidence. Shashank Singh, who played prominently for the Punjab Kings franchise in the IPL 2026 season earlier this year, has yet to issue an official statement regarding the active investigation.
