His duty is not only to send souls to the next life, but also to judge them based on their past deeds. Once the souls are transported to Yamaloka, it is presented before Yamaraj, who judges and separates the souls into heaven, hell and the judging process itself.Accountant general of Picture Secret DeedsThe Skanda Purana tells us that Chitragupta was born out of Brahma and that it is his responsibility to document each and every good and bad deed done by humans. They say Chitragupta keeps a diary of every person's good and bad deeds and once the soul leaves the earth for Yamaloka, Chitragupta shows this whole report to Yamaraj.
