Land-for-Jobs Case: Big Setback for Lalu Prasad Yadav as Delhi High Court Dismisses Plea

In a significant legal blow to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo and former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed his plea seeking a stay on the proceedings in the high-profile Land-for-Jobs Scam. The court’s decision clears the way for the trial court to continue its examination of the evidence and charges against the veteran politician. The High Court’s Ruling The petition filed by Lalu Prasad Yadav challenged the summons and the cognizance taken by the trial court in the case being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). However, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma’s bench refused to interfere with the lower court's order, stating that there was no sufficient ground at this stage to halt the ongoing judicial process.Understanding the Land-for-Jobs Scam The case dates back to the period between 2004 and 2009, when Lalu Prasad Yadav served as the Union Railway Minister. It is alleged that several individuals were appointed to Group D positions in various railway zones across India. In exchange for these "substitutes" getting permanent jobs, their families allegedly sold or gifted land parcels to the Yadav family and their associated companies at significantly undervalued rates.Current Legal Status The CBI has already filed multiple charge sheets in the matter, naming Lalu Prasad Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi, and their son Tejashwi Yadav, among others, as accused. The Enforcement Directorate is simultaneously investigating the money laundering aspect of the case. While the RJD leadership has consistently termed the investigation a "political vendetta" by the central government, the agencies maintain that they have documented proof of land transfers linked directly to railway appointments. What Happens Next? With the High Court dismissing the plea, the trial in the Rouse Avenue Court will proceed as scheduled. This development comes at a sensitive time for the RJD, as the party prepares for upcoming political challenges in Bihar. The legal team for the Yadav family is expected to review the judgment and may approach the Supreme Court for further relief.
