Lightweight Revolution: 10 kg Composite LPG Cylinders Set to Transform Commercial and Small Business Cooking

Handling bulky, traditional steel cylinders could soon become a thing of the past for thousands of small entrepreneurs across India. In a major move to upgrade fuel logistics, state-owned oil marketing companies—including Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)—are actively working on a plan to make lightweight 10 kg composite LPG cylinders available to commercial users. If approved by regulators, this strategic shift will provide much-needed relief to street food vendors, small cafe owners, and roadside stalls who have long struggled to move heavy 19 kg commercial steel models.Advanced HDPE Technology Driving a 50% Weight ReductionThe engineering behind these new-age cylinders marks a significant upgrade over conventional iron packaging. Manufactured using High-Density Polyethene (HDPE) via multi-layer composite design, these units are approximately 50 per cent lighter than standard steel tanks. This massive weight reduction makes them exceptionally easy to carry up steep staircases, transport via two-wheelers, or position within constrained kiosk setups.Furthermore, the cylinder boasts a highly unique, translucent outer layer. Users can see the exact remaining gas level in real time, without relying on mechanical pressure gauges, so businesses can schedule refills and avoid sudden operational halts.Expanding From Selected Households to Retail Fuel OutletsCurrently, these 10 kg composite cylinders are circulated on a restricted scale exclusively for domestic household users. They are distributed under specialised product brands: HPCL’s HP Gas Ojas, IndianOil’s Indane Xtralight, and BPCL’s Bharatgas Lite. Our ongoing pilot expansion will introduce identical composite shell assets directly into the commercial market. Reports indicate that once finalised, these lightweight tanks will be available through standard regional gas distributors and designated retail petrol pumps that sell commercial LPG.Current Market Framework and Projected Commercial PricingWhile the official pricing architecture for the 10 kg commercial composite gas tank is still awaiting final confirmation, corporate analysts estimate it will align proportionally between the existing 5 kg and 19 kg variants. For context, commercial LPG rates remain structured higher than domestic cooking fuels due to differences in state taxation.Cylinder Type & CapacityCurrent Market Price (Delhi)Domestic Steel Cylinder (14.2 kg)₹942.00Commercial Steel Cylinder (19 kg)₹2,930.00Commercial Small Cylinder (5 kg)₹808.50Commercial Composite Cylinder (10 kg)To Be AnnouncedEmpowering Migrant Workers and Emerging Food HubsThe execution of this light-capacity delivery layout stands to benefit micro-enterprises whose daily fuel requirements are moderate. Beyond tea stalls and temporary food kiosks, this change is expected to gain significant traction among students, temporary gig-economy workers, and migrant labourers inhabiting rented premises across tier-1 and tier-2 metros. By simplifying logistics and offering clear usage tracking, the transition to composite materials is a step toward a more user-friendly, modern fuel distribution network in India.
