Logistical Snafu Hobbles Launch of a a massive drive Voter List Verification Drive in Lucknow
The ambitious Special Intensive Revision (SIR) program, aimed at a thorough update of electoral rolls, stumbled at the start in Lucknow as the crucial door-to-door verification was largely paralyzed on its first day.The massive exercise, which deployed thousands of Booth Level Officers (BLOs), was hampered by a major logistical failure: the majority of these ground-level election workers were not provided with their necessary kits containing enumeration forms and other essential materials. The month-long intensive drive officially began on Tuesday with the goal of creating a transparent and error-free voter list. However, despite the mobilization of over 3,800 BLOs in the state capital, the fieldwork came to a standstill. Many BLOs who reported for duty were left without the tools to perform their task of visiting every household to verify voter information. This extensive program, being conducted in Uttar Pradesh after a gap of 22 years, is a critical exercise to purify the electoral rolls by adding new eligible voters and removing ineligible names, such as those of deceased or shifted individuals, and rectifying duplicate entries. The process involves BLOs providing each voter with a two-copy enumeration form to be filled out. One copy is to be retained by the voter and the other by the BLO. Political parties are also actively involved, having appointed their own booth-level agents to work in tandem with the BLOsThe initial disarray, marked by the non-delivery of essential kits, has raised concerns about the administrative preparedness for such a large-scale and vital undertaking. For the Special Intensive Revision to achieve its objective of a clean and inclusive voter list, seamless logistical support for the field staff is indispensable. Authorities will now be under pressure to rapidly address these shortcomings to ensure the month-long campaign proceeds effectively and meets its deadline for publishing the final electoral roll.
