Meerut's Sohrab Gate Bus Stand to Move to Lohia Nagar: Traffic Relief on Garh Road Awaited Amid Passenger Concerns

Commuters and residents navigating the bustling streets of Meerut can soon expect a major change in the city's transport layout. The administration is gearing up to relocate the prominent Sohrab Gate bus stand to Lohia Nagar on Hapur Road. While this strategic move aims to eradicate persistent traffic bottlenecks, it brings mixed reactions as commuters prepare for logistical shifts and temporary infrastructure hurdles.Strategic Shift to Alleviate Garh Road CongestionFor years, the existing Sohrab Gate bus stand situated on Garh Road has been a major contributor to heavy traffic congestion. With hundreds of Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) buses and contracted vehicles operating daily, curbside parking and turning maneuvers frequently choke the thoroughfare. To resolve this, transport authorities have fast-tracked preparations at a temporary facility in Lohia Nagar, located opposite the Bijli Bamba police post. Local officials indicate that the complete transition of bus operations is planned to take place shortly after the upcoming festival season, paving the way for the long-awaited reconstruction of the main terminal under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.Commuter Concerns Over Facilities and DistanceWhile the relocation promises smoother vehicular movement on Garh Road, it introduces new challenges for passengers:Incomplete Amenities: Although the temporary site features newly laid pavements and passenger sheds, basic infrastructural necessities such as functional drinking water facilities and public toilets remain absent, raising concerns over commuter comfort.Increased Travel Distance: Situated on the outskirts near Hapur Road, the Lohia Nagar facility will require residents from distant localities like Kankarkheda, Roorkee Road, and Delhi Road to travel an extra 10 to 15 kilometers, increasing both commute time and auto or e-rickshaw expenses to reach Moradabad, Lucknow, Agra, and Aligarh routes.Rebuilding Under PPP and Operational ChangesThe renovation project at the original site is being executed by Kuntari Build Pvt. Ltd., utilizing roughly 9,700 square meters of land leased from the Development Authority for the Lohia Nagar temporary arrangement. While bus operations shift to the outskirts, the workshop facilities are being moved to the main Meerut Depot premises to streamline maintenance work.
