Mirzapur Animal Smuggling Scandal: Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer Suspended Over Cow Shelter Cover-Up

A high-profile bovine smuggling racket operating out of a government-backed animal shelter has sent shockwaves through the administration in Uttar Pradesh. The state government has officially suspended Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Tejendra Singh for gross negligence, dereliction of duty, and active connivance in connection with the systematic smuggling of cattle from the Sonbarsa cow shelter, located in the Lalganj block of Mirzapur district. How an Overturned Pickup Truck Exposed the RacketThe clandestine operation unraveled on January 27, when local law enforcement agencies intercepted a suspicious pickup truck laden with cattle, allegedly being smuggled from the Sonbarsa shelter toward the neighboring state of Bihar. During a high-speed police chase, the vehicle overturned, allowing authorities to apprehend the driver, Anil Prajapati, a resident of Sonbhadra, while an accomplice named Dilip managed to flee toward Kaimur, Bihar.Subsequent interrogation of the arrested driver blew the lid off a massive administrative and political nexus. Prajapati confessed that the shelter’s management—led by local political figures and administrative staff—was directly orchestrating the illegal transport of protected bovine animals, earning thousands of rupees per illicit trip.Sweeping Action Against Officials and Local LeadersFollowing the initial breakthrough, investigative authorities and district officials moved swiftly to dismantle the network:Political and Village-Level Complicity: Shyam Bahadur Patel, the village head of Dubar Devghata Sonbarsa and a district-level party leader, was arrested alongside two others. District Magistrate Pawan Kumar Gangwar subsequently stripped him of his administrative powers.Administrative Crackdown: Village Panchayat Officer Krishnalal and Livestock Extension Officer Jagdamba Prasad Singh (attached to the Lahangpur Government Animal Service Center) were also placed under suspension. Investigations revealed severe discrepancies in official shelter registers, missing ear-tagging on animals, and willful neglect of statutory welfare responsibilities.Top-Level Accountability: Following a confidential state-level inquiry that established direct culpability, Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Tejendra Singh faced suspension. Meanwhile, Dr. Yudhveer Singh, the Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer of Chunar, has been handed the additional charge of Lalganj to stabilize local administrative operations. The unfolding scandal highlights deep-rooted vulnerabilities in rural animal welfare management, prompting calls for tighter state-wide surveillance on government-funded cow shelters to prevent future exploits by corrupt officials and local syndicates.
