In case the banks operate for 5 days, the relief of increased workload summers for bank employees will be greatly overcompensated.The government gave information The government stated in the Parliament that the suggestion of a 5 day workweek in banks is under consideration. The Indian Banks Association (IBA) has suggested closing all Saturdays for bank operations. The government is still contemplating the suggestion.What is the proposal?The All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC) argued that banks should only operate from Monday to Friday. They claim that this will enhance the employees' well-being, productivity, and morale. This system is already being implemented in many countries as well as in the private sector. Currently, government banks observe two holidays every month on the second and fourth Saturdays. The banks were open on the remaining Saturdays, which is a practice that started in 2015. Rajya Sabha MP KC Venugopal raised concerns in Parliament. He inquired on what the government is doing about the proposal, if it is stagnant due to understaffing, and what the plans for the proposal's future are. Government's reply The government’s response was that the proposal from the IBA is still being reviewed. Additionally, it was noted that every bank hires as per the need of the bank. The government also noted that as of 31st March 2025, 96% of the positions are filled and the remaining vacancies are due to normal attrition like retirements and resignations.Will relief come soon?At the moment, there is no confirmed date decided for the implementation of all Saturday holidays. However, the government and IBA are, without a doubt, trying to resolve this concern. A definite decision could be made soon. If this proposal is accepted, bank employees will be entitled to two weekly offs.
