Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently stepped in to condemn the personal attacks directed at the Chief Justice of India (CJI), D.Y. Chandrachud. The criticism against the CJI followed a comment he made during a court hearing related to a Hindu idol. The Prime Minister reached out and had a telephone conversation with Justice B.R. Gavai to express his disapproval of the way the CJI was being targeted. Justice Gavai later confirmed that the Prime Minister was concerned about the nature of the attacks. "The Prime Minister strongly condemned it," Justice Gavai stated while speaking at a felicitation event. He added that while people have the right to criticize a judgment, it is not right to launch personal attacks against a judge. The issue began when a group of lawyers and a right-wing organization started criticizing CJI Chandrachud for a remark made in court. This escalated into what Justice Gavai described as "vicious personal attacks" on online platforms.Justice Gavai shared that during his conversation with the Prime Minister, he mentioned that he and the CJI have very different ideologies but have always maintained a respectful relationship. "Our ideologies might be different, but we are united as a nation," he remarked, emphasizing that their commitment is to the country first. He highlighted that despite their differing views, he has never seen the CJI carry any personal bias into his professional decisions. The incident has brought attention to the line between fair criticism of a court's decision and inappropriate personal attacks on judges. The Prime Minister's intervention is being seen as a significant gesture in support of maintaining the dignity and respect of the country's judicial institutions.
