
In a landmark decision aimed at women's financial autonomy, the Punjab Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has officially approved the 'Mukh Mantri Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojna' on Sunday. This ambitious Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme is set to become one of the largest women-centric social protection initiatives in India, covering nearly 97% of the state's female population.Monthly Financial Benefits Under this new scheme, the Punjab government will provide direct cash assistance to women every month:General/Other Categories: ₹1,000 per month.Scheduled Castes (SC): ₹1,500 per month. The state has already sanctioned a massive budget of ₹9,300 crore for the financial year 2026-27 to support this initiative.Eligibility and Rules To ensure the benefits reach the right hands, the Cabinet has laid down clear eligibility criteria:Age: Women must be 18 years or older.Residency: Must be a permanent resident of Punjab with a valid Aadhaar card and a Voter ID registered in the state.No Family Limit: Unlike many other schemes, there is no restriction on the number of eligible women in a single family who can avail of this benefit.Additional Bonus: Existing social security pensioners (widows, elderly, etc.) will receive this amount in addition to their current pensions.Exclusions: Current or retired government employees, income tax payers, and present or former MPs/MLAs are not eligible for this assistance.Launch Date and Implementation Reports suggest the scheme is expected to be formally launched on Baisakhi (April 13, 2026). The government plans to undertake extensive outreach programs in rural and underserved areas to help women activate bank accounts and complete documentation.Why it Matters? The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) stated that this scheme aims to provide "tangible financial independence" to women, enabling them to fulfill their small desires with dignity and promoting a culture of savings and investment.
