Ludhiana. Bitter cold continues across northern India, including Punjab. The plains are colder than the mountains. On Monday, the minimum temperature in Bathinda dropped to 0.6 degrees, near the freezing point.Temperatures dropped below three degrees Celsius in six districts. Rewari in Haryana recorded a low of -1.5 degrees Celsius. Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 5.3 degrees Celsius, Mussoorie 4.6 degrees Celsius, and Jammu 3.4 degrees Celsius. The bitter cold and dense fog have disrupted normal life.There's no hope of respite from the cold for the next two to three days. This means Lohri and Makar Sankranti will have to be celebrated amidst bitter cold and dense fog. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert, warning that temperatures may drop further on Tuesday. Records are being broken as the cold wave intensifies.The dense fog that enveloped most districts on Sunday night persisted on Monday. The sun was visible in some places, but cold winds obscured the sunlight. In Bathinda, the minimum temperature dropped to 0.6 degrees Celsius, the lowest in four years.Zero degree visibilityThis was 4.4 degrees Celsius below normal. The minimum temperature was 1.1 degrees in Amritsar, 1.8 in Faridkot, 2 in Gurdaspur, 2.4 in Nawanshahr, 2.9 in Rupnagar and 3.8 in Ludhiana. The minimum temperature in Amritsar on Saturday night was 1.2 degrees. On Monday, visibility was minus 20 meters due to dense fog.
