In a significant update for automotive enthusiasts and everyday motorists across India, the Union Government has officially confirmed that premium grades of petrol will remain completely free from ethanol blending. Addressing queries in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi, stated that high-performance niche fuels sold by state-run Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are specially formulated with advanced performance-enhancing additives and will continue to be supplied in their pure form.These high-octane fuels—which include Indian Oil’s XP100, Bharat Petroleum’s Speed100, and Hindustan Petroleum’s poWer100—cater to luxury and super-performance vehicles. Priced at roughly ₹160 per litre compared to around ₹102 per litre for standard fuel, these top-tier grades account for a focused 0.5 per cent of India’s total petrol sales.Why E20 Petrol Rule Won’t Roll Back to E0 or E10Dispelling rumours regarding a potential return to pure petrol (E0) or lower ethanol blends (E10) for regular vehicles, the government firmly clarified that no proposal exists to restore earlier standards. Minister Suresh Gopi emphasised that managing multiple supply lines—E0, E10, and E20—across more than 1,00,000 fuel retail outlets nationwide would exponentially increase supply chain complexity, inventory management, and distribution costs.The government reiterated that once a cleaner, scientifically validated fuel standard is established, national energy policy must focus on technological progression rather than reverting to legacy blends.Zero Engine Failure Complaints Reported Across 23 Crore VehiclesAddressing public concerns regarding engine longevity with higher ethanol blends, the ministry confirmed that vehicle manufacturers or auto associations have lodged no official complaints. According to official data presented in Parliament, over 20 crore two-wheelers and more than 3 crore passenger cars are currently running on higher ethanol-blended petrol across India without operational issues or engine damage.Furthermore, public and private fuel retailers have been mandated to supply petrol blended with up to 20 per cent ethanol across the country. In the future, we will not push ethanol blending beyond 20% without comprehensive research, scientific validation, and detailed consultations with automobile manufacturers, OMCs, and research institutions.High-Octane RON 95 Standard and Future Energy GoalsTo improve combustion efficiency and reduce emissions, the ministry has notified ethanol-blended motor spirit with a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95 for nationwide rollout. Balancing consumer convenience, national energy security, environmental sustainability, and agricultural growth remains the core driver of India’s evolving biofuel roadmap.
