Special focus was given on the extent to which early childhood factors are crucial in deciding the adult health of heart and blood vessels.Research done on data of 8 lakh peopleThis study was nothing less than enormous. About 800,000 men and women born between 1973 and 1982 had their data on their lifestyle, socio-economic background and early medical records examined by Dr. Lena Lilja, Dr. Maria Bygdal of the University of Gothenburg and their colleagues. Their data included information on cases of stroke that occurred up to 31st December 2022.Frightening statistics emergeOn examination, a total of 2,252 cases of the first occurrence of stroke among these people was identified. These cases were further classified as follows:1,624 were instances of ischemic stroke.588 were instances of intracerebral hemorrhage.Effect observed on both gendersThe data from the study showed that participants with low birth weight showed 21% increased risk of a stroke overall. Ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes were both at the same heightened risk.On analyzing the data as per gender:Women born at low weight showed 18% increased risk of stroke.Men born at low weight showed 23% increased risk of stroke.BMI and Gestation period showed no effectThe most surprising yet the most crucial finding from this study is that, the risk of stroke caused by low birth weight is not dependent on Body Mass Index or Gestational Age. This means that, it does not matter what your BMI or when you are born, if your birth weight is less than the ideal it's a sign of increased risk of a stroke.
