Nowadays, people like to eat a lot of ultra-processed foods while working in the office, watching movies or relaxing during holidays. But a related study is causing worry because research is saying eating packaged foods impacts a person's ability to concentrate. Not only this, the slow loss of focus can invite diseases like dementia.Eating chips makes you lose bodyEating foods that are highly processed raises the risk of dementia, research from Monash University in Australia has found. The study ran from November 2016 to December 2023 and included about 2,100 people aged between 40 and 70.The findings of the study were surprising. Research found that a 10% increase in the daily intake of ultra-processed foods affects a person’s concentration. Surprisingly, ultra-processed foods have the same effect on the body even when the daily diet includes healthy foods. The research also suggests that a 10% increase in the consumption of ultra-processed foods is the equivalent of eating a pack of chips every day.Why are ultra-processed foods so unhealthy?Ultra-processed foods, or UPFs, are created from ingredients that are not typically found in a kitchen. These ingredients are preservatives, emulsifiers, sweeteners, fats and artificial colours. Whether these foods are chips, energy drinks or candy, they are produced using techniques like molding and extrusion.Dementia risk is increased by packaged foodEating packaged foods every day has been linked to dementia, heart disease and obesity, research has shown. These foods contain preservatives, sweeteners, fat and artificial colors that impair brain function. What is interesting to note is that the study found no direct connection between packaged foods and memory loss.
