In India alone, approximately 100,000 patients require corneal transplants every year to regain their sight.Despite the tireless efforts of nearly 396 operational eye banks across the country, collections fall significantly short of demand. National health data highlights that while 62,370 donor corneas were collected in 2022–23, the numbers rose modestly to 66,434 in 2023–24, and reached 69,848 in 2024–25. Averaging roughly 66,000 collections annually against a demand of 100,000, roughly 34,000 citizens each year continue to face permanent darkness simply due to a lack of available donor tissue.What is an Artificial Cornea and How Does It Work?To combat this critical gap, medical science has introduced the artificial cornea, clinically known as a keratoprosthesis. Rather than relying on human biological tissue, this advanced prosthetic device is meticulously engineered from specialized biocompatible materials.The device features a central transparent optical component designed to bypass scarred or damaged natural tissue. When implanted, it reopens the light pathway that was previously blocked by a diseased cornea, allowing incoming light to pass smoothly through the eye and reach the retina. From the retina, visual signals are transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve. While it does not repair underlying retinal or optic nerve damage, it re-establishes the critical physical gateway required for vision.Who Benefits From Artificial Corneas and What Is the Cost?Clinical applications at AIIMS have shown highly encouraging results, with experts noting that approximately 20 patients have successfully received artificial cornea implants so far. However, specialists clarify that this procedure is not suited for every case of corneal blindness; it is primarily designated for complex, high-risk patients where a standard donor corneal transplant has already failed or carries a critically low probability of success.While postoperative vision recovery depends heavily on the pre-existing health of the patient's retina and optic nerve, the procedure successfully restores functional, useful vision to those who were previously considered untreatable. Financially, the cost of a keratoprosthesis procedure in India typically ranges between ₹200,000 and ₹400,000, varying according to specific medical equipment, hospital overheads, and the individual patient's clinical condition.
