Supreme Court’s New Ruling on Stray Dogs: The Supreme Court has made a key ruling today that will affect how stray dogs are treated. The court has ordered that no street dog can be sent to a shelter. Dogs that have already been caught by city teams must be released right away— but they can be freed only after they have been sterilized. A notice has been sent to all state governments telling them to follow this ruling.Dog lovers across the country are breathing a sigh of relief. A week ago, the Supreme Court had ordered that all stray dogs in the Delhi NCR region be rounded up and kept in shelter homes. Right after that, animal rights activists filled the streets to protest and many petitions were quickly filed in the same court.Today’s announcement is welcome news. In a fast hearing on the petitions, the Supreme Court has banned any further dog round-ups. The bench has said that the cities can engage in what is called “population management” but only in line with the new humane directive. The court has also instructed that all dogs already trapped should be returned to their territories, with the sterilization mandate applied to ensure that they can remain on the streets without adding to the numbers.
