TCS Revises Bench Policy, Raising Job Security Concerns Among Employees

TCS employees in particular are experiencing corporate anxiety. The implementation of a new policy has put over 600,000 employees at risk of unemployment, leading to panic. Why exactly are the employees at TCS panicking? It looks like a new policy that the company is enforcing will force many employees into unemployment. The employees who do not have a project lined up, and are put on “bench,” can only remain inactive for a month. This means that up until July 18, those who are labeled as inactive will be given 35 days to be productive, or risk losing their jobs. The period within which they must have a new project or prove they can be productive begins on July 19. TCS has cemented a reputation for being strict, and there is no indication as to why this would update. Their reputation within the tech sector will be further tarnished. The most concerning part about the newly enforced policy is that there is no room for slack. If an employee fails to prove their “productivity” in the month post the July 19 deadline, they lose their job. The implemented deadlines do not look forgiving either, meaning there is a chance TCS might be firing more than just one of their employees. The imposed timelines serve the purpose of hindering deserving employees, only to fuel the fire for the companies’ already existing reputation.Numerous TCS employees have expressed their thoughts on various social media platforms. Employees of TCS, for instance, are resorting to expressing their troubles on platforms like Reddit. It is evident from the online conversations that workers are being coerced into roles that completely ignore their qualifications. There are countless employees who are being forced into positions that are against their will. One user on Reddit succinctly said that workers need to be prepared for termination. Compulsion to transfer to a project with different skill set Another user has written, “I was trained in Java. But after being on the bench for a month, I am being pressured to join a support project which has nothing to do to either Java or Python.” News 18 has yet to independently confirm such claims. The latest bench policy is that employees must relentlessly work for no less than 225 business days in a year and provide services worth revenues to the company. All employees are subjected to this new rule.TCS employs over 6 lakh people globally. TCS has not made public the count of employees who are benchmarked, but industry estimates suggest that typically around 15-18 percent of the organization’s workforce are benchmarked. TCS currently has approximately 6,13,000 employees across the globe. This indicates that as a result of the new bench policy, the company will need to reduce thousands of positions, and thereby people will end up losing their jobs. On the other, some employees state that the company is trying to do the right thing by getting rid of employees who have become stagnant and have been on the bench for years.
