The Sacred Art of Lighting a Lamp Vastu's Guide to a Positive Home

In Hindu tradition, the act of lighting a lamp, or 'diya', in the home temple is a sacred daily ritual. Beyond being a symbol of light and divinity, the way a lamp is lit holds significant importance according to Vastu Shastra, the ancient Indian science of architecture and design. Following the correct procedure is believed to not only please the deities but also to usher in positive energy, happiness, and prosperity into the household while dispelling negativity. When performing daily worship, it is considered auspicious to use a lamp filled with cow's ghee. A ghee lamp is traditionally lit for the deities, and it is recommended to place a white, upright cotton wick in it. This practice is believed to bring peace, health, and happiness to the family. Alternatively, if you are using an oil lamp, such as one with mustard or sesame oil, a red-colored wick, known as 'mauli', should be used. An oil lamp is often lit to appease deities like Shani Dev, Bhairav, and Hanuman, and is said to help in overcoming obstacles and troubles. The direction in which the lamp's flame faces is also crucial. According to Vastu, the wick should always point towards the north or east direction. It is believed that a north-facing flame attracts wealth and prosperity, while an east-facing flame promotes good health and brings peace. Conversely, one should avoid lighting a lamp with the wick facing south, as this direction is associated with Yama, the god of death, and is considered inauspicious. A west-facing flame is thought to increase debts and create financial problems. It is also important to maintain the cleanliness and integrity of the lamp. A broken or dirty lamp should never be used in worship, as it can bring negative energy. The lamp should be cleaned daily before being lit. The ideal times to light the lamp are in the morning between 5 AM and 10 AM, and in the evening between 5 PM and 7 PM. This regular practice helps in maintaining a continuous flow of positive energy throughout the home, ensuring the well-being and prosperity of its inhabitants.
