The Sawan month (also called Shravana) is a critical period of devotion in Hinduism as it falls chiefly in the worship of Lord Shiva. Mondays or Somwar of the month are sacred to the Lord Shiva and observing a fast or Vrat on these days along with reciting or listening to Vrat Katha (sacred story) of the day is a very valued spiritual endeavor. This practice is believed to bestow immense grace and desires. What is the Sawan Somwar Vrat Katha? The Sawan Somwar Vrat is a fast to be cumpleted on the Sawan month Mondays. The primary aim of undertaking this fast is to seek divine grace of Lord Shiva for good fortune, health, prosperity in marital relations, and all wishes and desires. In essence, Katha is a story, which consists od fasting, Lord Shiva and most importantly, his unending grace for those who worthy worship him.Typically, observers wake up early, take a ritual bath, put on fresh garments, and perform a specific form of puja (worship) for Lord Shiva. This commonly features the offering of sacred items such as milk, Ganga Jal (holy water from the Ganges), Bel Patra (the leaves of the Bilva tree which are revered by Shiva), dhatura flowers, and even rice to the Shiva Lingam. Devotees often listen to or read the Sawan Somwar Vrat Katha during or after the puja. The fasting period is typically broken after sunset or once the puja and Katha is done, allowing devotees to consume 'satvik' (pure, simple) food.It is believed performing this fast with sincere faith, especially in the month of Sawan, is immensely favorable to Lord Shiva. This often results in the granting of wishes with the removal of obstacles and overall well-being being bestowed on the devotee and their family.
