It is also known as the sacred thread ceremony, the holy thread ceremony, the Janeo ceremony or sacred thread ritual.Janeu is not merely a social or customary ritual, it is the holy start for a child to learn about Brahma Vidya.Why is Upanayana required in Kam?Children are extremely pure like a blank piece of paper, so it is said that they should be initiated into the Gayatri Mantra between the ages of seven and nine before they fall intoworldly enticements, so that whatever knowledge is given reaches straight into the depths and they get the feel of truth and truth before the illusion of the world captures their attention.For any child, youth is the phase where habits are most easily inculcated and once learned can hardly be erased. Through the Upanayana ritual, the child gets in the practice of performing daily Sandhyavandanam which enhances his punctual, disciplined and concentrating nature that plays a great role throughout life and helps him become a capable individual.The advancement of intellect and wisdomThe Gayatri Mantra is also known as 'Vega Mata' (Mother of Light), and regular chanting of the Mantra from the age of childhood is considered to enhance the child’s memory, intellect.Through the recitation of this mantra, thought processes and mental state become enhanced. It is considered to provide immense inner strength and guides children through the proper way in all life situations.Upanayana means to take one closer, implying that to the knowledge and to the Guru. Post this ritual, the child is given the title of Dwija (one who has been born twice) wherein the first birth is physical via the parents and the second birth is spiritual. From this point on, the child becomes a Brahmachari and starts on a journey of learning, responsibility and self-discovery.Earlier on, the child would go on to receive his education from the Gurukul only after the Upanayana ceremony. In today's rapidly changing times, this ritual still remains in practice and instills in the child the qualities of honesty, truth, not succumbing to the negative feelings like ego and jealousy and not chasing materialistic greed.
