New Delhi. If you sit on a chair for a long time in the office or at home, then this news will bother you. A study in America has increased the concern of the people. According to this, the habit of sitting for a long time can become a serious health problem. According to a new study in America, one in every four people sits in one place for more than 8 hours every day. This study states that if you sit for more than 10 hours every day, then your risk of getting heart disease increases.

 

That's why doctors are advising people to do as much physical activity as possible. A study recently published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and presented at the 2024 Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association revealed that if you sit, lie down, or rest for more than 10.6 hours every day, it can increase the risk of heart failure and death from heart disease, even for people who exercise regularly.

Physical activity can be beneficial for heart health

In this study, researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of Cambridge analyzed data from 89,530 participants from the UK Biobank. The daily activities of the people involved in the study were tracked, after which it was found out for how long people were in a sitting, lying,g or resting position.

 

Apart from this, it was also tracked how many people were engaged in high physical activity. The study also observed that a maximum of 150 minutes of physical activity every week can prove beneficial for heart health.

Sitting for more than 10 hours increases the risk by 40%

After eight years of research, it was clear that people who sit, lie do,wn, or relax for 10.6 hours or more every day hurt their heart health. The study also found that people who had the habit of sitting for 10.6 hours or more had a 40% increased risk of heart attack and death from heart disease.

How can the risk of heart disease be reduced?

The study also found that the negative effects of prolonged sitting were somewhat reduced for those who engaged in physical activity, but those who sat for more than 10.6 hours a day still had an increased risk of heart disease and heart attack.

People who do physical labour for more than 150 minutes a week also have a 15% lower risk of heart disease. It is better that we can avoid this problem by making some simple changes in our daily routine.
