Diwali is a festival full of joy and happiness. Crackers, sweets, decorations, and the coming and going of guests make this festival even more special, but this time can also bring some challenges for heart patients. Heart patients should take special precautions during Diwali so that their health remains good. Let us know from Dr. Bimal Chhajer (Former Consultant – at AIIMS and Director of Saaol Heart Center, New Delhi) what should be done and what things should be avoided.

  • 1. Avoid sweets and fried foods-

Dr. Bimal Chhajer said that there is a trend of eating sweets and fried dishes on Diwali, but heart patients should avoid eating things with excess oil, ghee, and sugar. These things can increase blood pressure and cholesterol, which can further increase heart problems. Eat sweets but in limited quantity and try to eat healthy sweets made at home.

  • 2. Stay away from smoking and alcohol-

Some people consume cigarettes or alcohol during Diwali. This can be dangerous for heart patients. Smoking and alcohol can increase the pressure on the heart and can also increase the risk of heart attack. Therefore, keep a complete distance from these.

  • 3. Avoid loud music and firecrackers-

Loud noises and smoke from firecrackers can be harmful to the health of heart patients. Listening to loud noises can increase stress and smoke can cause breathing problems. Therefore, it would be better if you celebrate the festival in a calm environment. Use diyas and candles instead of firecrackers, which will also reduce pollution.

  • 4. Take care of your sleep-

During festivals, people often stay up late at night, but heart patients need to get adequate sleep. Less sleep causes fatigue and can also increase blood pressure. Therefore, make sure to sleep for 7-8 hours every day and take rest.

  • 5. Stay away from mental stress-

Shopping, cleaning, and other preparations during the festival can sometimes be stressful. Heart patients should avoid too much stress as it increases pressure on the heart. Work comfortably and if possible, take help from other family members.

Heart patients need to be a little cautious during Diwali. By avoiding sweets, loud noise, smoke, smoking, and stress, you can enjoy the festival without any health problems. Take medicines on time after consulting your doctor and follow the necessary instructions to stay healthy.
