Kanpur: Bangladeshi fan Tiger Robbie, who was allegedly assaulted and abused during the first day of the second Test between India and Bangladesh on Friday, is now stable and has been taken to a hospital for a check-up, Uttar Pradesh police said.
Robby, a Dhaka fan, was allegedly beaten up and abused by spectators at the Green Park Stadium following which he was taken to hospital by the police.
A police officer present at the stadium said that Robbie was feeling unwell before reaching here and he fainted due to heat in the unauthorized C-Upper Stand. This stand was closed by the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) due to security concerns.
"He is fine now and we took him to a hospital for a check-up. However, he was not attacked. He fainted due to heat and dehydration," the police officer said.
The incident took place during the first session of the match when Robbie was seen waving the Bangladeshi flag from the stands. The incident reportedly led to a confrontation with some Indian spectators. Security personnel then handled the situation. However, Robbie later alleged that he was assaulted by a group of local fans during the lunch break.
According to media reports, Robbie was abusing Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj from the stands and hence he got into a confrontation with the Indian fans.
Bangladesh had a bad start after losing the toss and batting first in the second test match of the two-match test series. By the end of the rain-affected first day, the visiting team had scored 107 runs at the loss of three wickets. On Friday, the first day of the match was stumped early due to heavy rain in Kanpur. Today only 35 overs could be played.
