PCOD (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) is becoming a common problem in women. Dr. Aastha Dayal (Director - Obstetrics and Gynecology, CK Birla Hospital Gurugram) said that it is caused by hormonal imbalance, in which small cysts are formed in the ovaries. This problem can affect fertility as well as cause other serious diseases, such as heart attacks.

Relation between PCOD and heart attack?

Women with PCOD may be at increased risk of heart attack. There are several reasons for this:

  • Insulin resistance: Insulin resistance is a common problem in women suffering from PCOD. This means that insulin is not used properly in the body, which increases the level of sugar in the blood. Prolonged insulin resistance increases the risk of diabetes, which is a major cause of heart attack.
  • High blood pressure: PCOD also causes high blood pressure. High blood pressure puts pressure on the heart arteries and increases the risk of heart attack.
  • Cholesterol level imbalance: Women suffering from PCOD may have increased levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and decreased levels of good cholesterol (HDL). This can cause blockage in the arteries, increasing the risk of heart attack.
  • Obesity: Weight gain is also a common problem due to PCOD. Obesity is considered a major cause of heart disease as it puts more pressure on the heart.

How to reduce the risk of heart attack due to PCOD?

Healthy diet: Women suffering from PCOD should consume high-fiber and low-sugar foods. This will keep the insulin level balanced and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Regular exercise: Daily exercise is necessary to control weight and maintain blood pressure. It helps in keeping the heart healthy.

Avoid smoking and alcohol: Both these habits promote heart disease. Women suffering from PCOD should avoid them.

Regular check-up: Blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure should be checked regularly so that any problem can be treated in time.

PCOD should not be taken lightly as it can lead to heart disease. This risk can be reduced by timely treatment and lifestyle changes.
