Women's income tax payers in the country are increasing rapidly. Income Tax Returns (ITR) were submitted by 2.29 crore women in the assessment year 2023-24, while this figure was 1.83 crore in the assessment year 2019-20. Thus, the number of ITRs submitted by women has increased by 25 percent in the last five years. According to the data of the Ministry of Finance, the number of women submitting ITR in Maharashtra has increased by 23 percent or 6.88 lakh from 29.94 lakh in the assessment year 2019-20 to 36.83 lakh in the assessment year 2023-24. In Uttar Pradesh, 15.81 lakh women submitted ITR in the assessment year 2019-20.
In the assessment year 2023-24, this number has increased by 29 percent or 4.62 lakh to 20.43 lakh. At the same time, in Gujarat, 22.50 lakh ITRs have been deposited in the assessment year 2023-24, 24 percent or 4.41 lakh more than the figure of 18.08 lakh in the assessment year 2019-20. In terms of ITRs deposited by women in the assessment year 2023-24, Maharashtra (36.82 lakh), Gujarat (22.50 lakh), Uttar Pradesh (20.43 lakh), Karnataka (14.30 lakh) and Punjab (13.22 lakh) were among the top five.
Between assessment year 2019-20 and assessment year 2023-24, the number of ITRs filed by women in Ladakh has increased seven times from 30 to 205. This is the largest increase in any state and union territory during the review period. Among all the states and union territories of India, Chandigarh is the only state where the number of ITRs filed by women has decreased from 89,873 to 88,115 from the ssessment year 2019-20 to the assessment year 2023-24. The total number of ITRs filed in the country has also increased rapidly. A record 6.77 crore ITRs were filed in the assessment year 2023-24.
In India, it is mandatory to file income tax returns for all those people whose income exceeds the exemption limit set by the government. The increase in the number of ITRs shows that people's income is increasing and their standard of living is improving.
