New Delhi: Nitish Kumar Reddy's all-round performance (74 runs and two wickets) and his 108-run stand in 49 balls for the fourth wicket with Rinku Singh (53) helped India take an unassailable 2-0 lead by defeating Bangladesh by 86 runs in the second match of the three-match Twenty20 International series here on Wednesday.
21-year-old Reddy hit four fours and seven sixes in his 34-ball innings while Rinku hit five fours and three sixes in his 29-ball innings. India, batting first, scored 221 runs for nine wickets and then restricted Bangladesh to 135 runs for nine wickets. India had won the first match of the series by seven wickets. The third match of the series will be played in Hyderabad on October 12.
Mahmudullah, who is playing his last international series in this format for Bangladesh, contributed the most 41 runs. He hit three sixes in his 39-ball innings. After performing brilliantly with the bat, Reddy also took two wickets. Varun Chakraborty also had two successes. Apart from Reddy and Rinku, all-rounder Hardik Pandya contributed 32 runs in 19 balls and made a significant contribution in taking the team's score beyond 200.
For Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed bowled brilliantly and took two wickets for just 16 runs in four overs. Tanjim Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman also got two wickets each but both were quite expensive. Rishad Hussain took three wickets for 55 runs.
Chasing the target, Parvez Hussain Emon (16 runs in 12 balls) made an aggressive start by hitting three fours in Arshdeep's first over, but the bowler bowled him in his next over to give India its first breakthrough. Bangladesh captain Nazmul Hasan Shanto (11 runs in 7 balls) opened the innings with two consecutive fours. Liton Das hit the first six of Bangladesh's innings in the fourth over against Reddy.
While trying to hit a big shot against Washington Sundar, Shanto got caught by Hardik Pandya standing at long-on. In the next over, Varun Chakraborty bowled Liton (14 runs in 11 balls). Bangladesh's score in the powerplay was 43 runs for three wickets. In the next over, Tauhid Hridoy (two runs in six balls) who came to bowl was bowled by Abhishek Sharma.
To reduce the rising run rate, Mahmudullah welcomed Riyan Parag with a six in the 11th over, but this all-rounder sent Miraz (16 runs in 16 balls) back to the pavilion on the last ball of the over. Mayank Yadav ended Zaker Ali's one-run innings in two balls by getting him caught by Washington. Pandya ended Rishhad's (nine runs in 10 balls) innings by taking a brilliant catch on Chakraborty's ball.
Mahmudullah completed Bangladesh's century by hitting a six against Mayank in the 15th over and then sent Chakravarthy's delivery into the stands. Reddy, who came in to bowl in the 18th over, dismissed Tanzim Hasan and then Mahmudullah to take his first wicket in international cricket.
Earlier, after being invited to bat first, Sanju Samson (10 runs in 7 balls) hit fours on consecutive balls against Miraj, while Abhishek Sharma (15 runs in 11 balls) ended the first over with a four. Samson could not extend his innings much and got caught by Nazmul Hasan Shanto on Taskin's ball.
Abhishek Tanjim was bowled after hitting fours on consecutive balls. India's problems increased after captain Suryakumar Yadav (eight) was out in the sixth over off Mustafizur's bowling, but Rinku Singh, who came to the crease, hit a four in this over, taking India's score to 45 runs for two wickets in the power play.
Rinku hit the first six of the match against Rishad who came to bowl in the eighth over, while Reddy took advantage of the free-hit against Mahmudullah and sent the ball to the spectators. The Indian team completed the century by collecting 24 runs in the 10th over. In this over of Rishad, Reddy hit two sixes while Rinku hit one six.
Reddy completed the first half-century of his international career with a run after hitting a four against Taskin. This young batsman completed a century partnership with Rinku Singh in 45 balls by hitting three sixes and a four against Miraz in the 13th over. The team scored 26 runs from this over. He returned to the pavilion after being caught by Miraz on Mustafizur's ball. However, his dismissal did not affect the Indian run rate because Pandya hit a six and a four on consecutive balls against Rishad as soon as he came to the crease.
Rinku completed his half-century in 26 balls with two fours and a six in the 16th over against Tanjim. He was caught by Jaker Ali standing at deep midwicket while trying to play a big shot on Taskin's ball. Riyan Parag (15 runs in six balls) also returned to the pavilion after hitting two sixes against Tanjim in the 19th over, while Rishan dismissed Pandya in the last over. In this over, Arshdeep hit a six and took the team's score to 220.
