Australia Passes Landmark Order: Australia has made a law to ban social media for children under the age of 16. A bill in this regard was passed in the Australian Parliament on Thursday, 28 November. After the bill was passed in both houses of the Australian Parliament, strict action on popular sites like Facebook, Instagram, and X was approved.
According to the rules of the bill, if a child under the age of 16 creates an account on sites like Facebook, Instagram,m and X, then the platform will be held responsible for it. There is a provision of a fine of up to 50 million Australian dollars (32.5 million US dollars) for not taking "appropriate steps" to prevent young teenagers from creating accounts and not following the rules.
Australia's new laws have been described by social media companies as vague, problematic, ic, and hastily made. This bill was passed by the lower house of Parliament on Wednesday, 27 Novem, problematic ber and was passed by the Senate on 28 November. Now it is set to become a law.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has strongly supported the new rules and has also appealed to parents to help make it effective. Anthony Albanese has called social media a platform for stress and the easiest medium for cyber thugs. Albanese also blamed social media for crimes against women. Anthony Albanese has said that he wants young Australians to stay away from their phones and play in football and cricket fields, tennis and netball courand tsand , and swimming pools.
Australia's new laws are being described as the strictest in terms of restrictions related to social media. However, it is believed that it will take at least 12 months for these restrictions to be implemented. The current law does not give any details about how the rules will be implemented.
