Israel's Fierce Attack on Lebanon
Apart from the capital city, Israel also attacked Shmeister in the Baalbek-Hermel region of eastern Lebanon, killing at least 13 people, including four children, and wounding 13 others. According to the report, airstrikes also took place in neighboring towns, killing 11 people and injuring 32. It said five people were killed and 19 injured in the Israeli bombing of the port city of Tyre.
What did the IDF say?
According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the air force attacked 12 Hezbollah command centers in Dahieh, Beirut. These 12 centers reportedly included Hezbollah's intelligence unit, the coast-to-coast missile unit, and Unit 4400 - which was responsible for smuggling weapons from Iran to Lebanon via Syria.
"These command centers were used to plan, order, and execute terrorist attacks against Israel and to monitor terrorist activities against IDF troops operating in southern Lebanon," the IDF said in its statement.
US ambassador present in the area
According to an AP report, this tension is increasing at a time when US Ambassador Amos Hochstein is on a visit to the region to reach a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.
The ministry said more than 3,500 Lebanese have been killed and 1.2 million people (a quarter of the country's population) displaced. In addition, 90 Israeli soldiers and 50 civilians have been killed as a result of the conflict. The known death toll of Palestinians in the 13-month Israeli offensive surpassed 44,000 this week, according to the health ministry.
