There are a large number of traders in the futures and options segment of the stock market. According to a statistic, more than 1 crore traders in India are involved in F&O trading. The National Stock Exchange has changed the expiry day of the contract for futures and options trading.
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has announced a change in the monthly expiry day of 4 F&O contracts. According to a circular issued by the exchange, all 4 F&O contracts will now expire on Thursday. These 4 F&O contracts are: Nifty Bank, FinNifty, Nifty Midcap Select, and Nifty Next 50. NSE said in its circular that this change will be effective from January 1, 2025. This decision was taken after the abolition of weekly contracts as per SEBI's instructions.

Currently, Nifty Bank's monthly and three-month contracts expire on the last Wednesday (business day) of the month. FinNifty, Nifty Midcap Select and Nifty Next 50 contracts expire on Tuesday, Monday, Thursday, and Friday respectively.

NSE said that there has been no change in the expiry day for Nifty 50 contracts (weekly, monthly, three-month, hs, and six months). Nifty 50 contracts expire on Thursday, which will continue.

NSE said in a circular that

"There is no change in the expiry day for Nifty's monthly, weekly, three-mo  , nth, and half-yearly contracts. This change will be effective from EOD of January 01, 2025, i.e. the expiry day for all existing contracts will be revised to January 01, 2025 (EOD) as the "new expiry day"."

Earlier in the week, BSE announced changes in the monthly expiry day for Sensex, Ba next, and Sensex 50 contracts. Monthly contracts of Sensex, Bankex, and Sensex 50 will now expire on Tuesday of every month. This change will be effective from January 1, 2025.

Weekly contracts of Sensex will also expire on Tuesday instead of Friday expiry.

Earlier, capital market regulator SEBI had announced several measures to strengthen the index derivative structure. The new framework came into effect on November 21. SEBI had advised NSE and BSE to have a single benchmark weekly expiry contract. After this, NSE and BSE discontinued weekly option contracts for all index derivative products except Nifty and Sensex.
