New Delhi. Young opening batsman Prithvi Shaw is going through the most difficult phase in his cricketing career these days. He has not been a part of the Indian team since July 2021 and recently his troubles increased when Mumbai dropped him from the Ranji Trophy mid-tournament calling him unfit. Now even though Shaw has got a place in the team again by Mumbai for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, no team has given him a place for the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025). After this, the challenge before Shaw is how to rekindle the lost trust of the people of the cricket management towards him.
Prithvi Shaw, captain of India's 2018 Under-19 World Cup winning team, was being seen as the next star of Indian cricket and expectations from him had increased after he scored a century on Test debut 6 seasons ago. But today he is not on anyone's radar in the cricket field. This time in the IPL auction, personalities like Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Ashish Nehra, Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, Zaheer Khan, Parthiv Patel, Stephen Fleming, and Daniel Vettori were on the auction table with different teams but none of them showed any interest in Shaw, who had a base price of Rs 75 lakh. His name came up twice in the auction and despite the base price of Rs 75 lakh, not a single bid was made for him.
Before this auction, Shaw returned to the Mumbai team for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and also played an innings of 33 runs in 22 balls in the first match of the tournament. Meanwhile, just two days ago, he appeared on a YouTube vlog, where he talked about the best one-line advice he got from Sachin Tendulkar.
The 25-year-old told social media influencer Karan Sonawane on his YouTube channel 'Focused Indian' that the great batsman had advised him that 'discipline beats talent.' But Monday must have been a difficult day for Shaw as he did not find any buyer at the IPL's big auction in Jeddah.
Perhaps now the time has come when he should not let Tendulkar's advice remain limited to mere words and should act upon it. Shaw should once again work hard on his fitness and impress the IPL franchises by playing big innings in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Apart from this, if this tournament does not work out, then he can once again find a way back in the coming summer by playing impressive cricket in domestic cricket as well as county cricket and impressing with his form and fitness.
A former Indian selector who has seen Prithvi closely told PTI, 'Prithvi has been in Delhi Capitals. It was in Delhi Capitals that he got a chance to interact with his Under-19 Indian Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, and Sourav Ganguly.'
He said, 'It is known to everyone in Mumbai cricket that Tendulkar has also spoken to him. Is this legend a fool? Do you see any change in him? Even if you see, it is not evident.' There is a saying in Indian cricket that perception travels faster than light and in the case of Prithvi, no positive thing is coming from any side. In the Indian cricket world, if the talk about someone's working style spreads like wildfire, then people do not want to associate with that cricketer.
