UN Chief Issue Warning: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the sea level in the Pacific Islands is rising very fast, which is a threat to the lives of people living on these islands. He said that the sea temperature in these islands is rising three times faster than the rest of the world.
Speaking at a conference in Tonga, Guterres said, "I have come here to seek help for the Pacific islands. Rising sea levels are a huge threat to these islands." He said that due to rising sea levels, storms and floods are increasing, causing damage to people's homes, fish are dying and agricultural land is getting damaged.
If immediate steps are not taken then the situation will get worse
Guterres said that due to climate change, the sea water is heating up and expanding, due to which the sea level is rising. He said that if we do not take immediate steps to stop global warming, then the situation will become even worse for the Pacific islands in the coming times.
Guterres has appealed to the countries of the world to work together to fight climate change. He said that we have to reduce the use of fossil fuels and promote the use of clean energy. Further, he also said that rich countries should give more money to poor countries to help them deal with the effects of climate change.
